Machine Head is the sixth studio album released by the English rock band Deep Purple. It was recorded during December in MontreuxSwitzerland, and released in March Machine Head is often cited as a major influence in the early development of the heavy metal music genre.

Commercially, it is Deep Purple's most successful album, topping the charts in several countries following its release. A Suicide Pact - Trophy Eyes - Chemical Miracle recording studio owned by the Rolling Stones had been booked and hotel reservations made, [1] but lead singer Ian Gillan contracted hepatitis.

Cancelling a forthcoming tour of America, the band placed all their plans on hold, and Gillan was advised by his doctor to spend the next few months recuperating. Nevertheless, enthused by the new project, the band travelled to Switzerland to begin recording.

The band had performed there in May and enjoyed both the location and Claude Nobsfounder and general manager of the famous Montreux Jazz Festival. The Casino closed for refurbishments each winter, and so the band arrived there on 3 December.

One last concert date remained, following which they were to have the location to themselves. Frank Zappa 's concert of 4 December at the Casino was made infamous when a member of the audience fired a flare into Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Head building's roof.

Although there were no fatalities, the Kolednica - Katalena - (Z)godbe fire ruined Deep Purple's plans.

Bass player Roger Glover said he woke up one morning saying the title " Smoke on the Water " out loud. Later Gillan, based on the title, wrote the lyrics describing the band's experience in Montreux, recording the Machine Head album. Ritchie Blackmore [6]. As a new location the Pavilion proved to be impractical, as nearby residents flooded the local police station's switchboard to complain about the noise the band made.

Although the police were prevented from entering the building by the band's roadies, who held the venue's doors shut, the band were quickly evicted. They searched for other locations in which to record and settled on the empty Grand Hotel, on the edge of Montreux. With the mobile recording unit parked at the main Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Headthey set up at the end of one of the building's corridors, off the main lobby.

This proved so arduous that they stopped listening to playbacks of their recordings, instead performing until they were satisfied with what they had.

A song entitled " When a Blind Man Cries " was recorded during these sessions, but not included on the album. Instead, it was used as the B-side on the " Never Before " single.

The song appears as a bonus track on the album's 25th anniversary edition. Wow, absolutely superb. An incredibly Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Head group Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Head a great variety of hard tunes on this classic.

Saw them in concert in Milwaukee, WI, spring3rd seats - Milwaukee Arena, in front of the amps. Ears have never been the same, thank God. This version quite simply is just joyful to listen to.

Each disc is different, you can hear it and feel it and both are just fun. The mastering is the best ever.

Even if you have XXXXX versions of this on CD, its worth five times more than this price, just to feel it with 21st century quality products. Amazon has an excellent price on this and you will be thrilled.

As Ozzie would say "what"? Just freaking buy it. All time classic - no need for a review here so here it is : everything except "Never Before" and some might argue "Pictures of Home" are throwaways. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar work still interesting after all of these years. Can't imagine someone buying this who's never heard it countless times before, but what do I know. Get the album format if you can; I don't ever see this at the Goodwill's or thrift stores like I see other classics.

This is kind of a duh, review. I am old enough to remember this album being new. It was the source of many a pleasant memory. As well as being the source of everyone's first heavy guitar progression. This is a great album, is every song fantastic, no. Life is like that, there is enough here to Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Head you, and that is the whole point. One person found this helpful.

This release by English heavy metal group Deep Purple is thunderous; a massive wall of progressive hard rock that overwhelms at times. Although I Game Over - Blackstar - Barbed Wire Soul not listened to this record in a long long time, the memories came back pretty quickly and it is every bit as good as I remember it being.

Better even, because there no skips and pops with the CD format. For me, the Mk. II lineup defined the Deep Purple sound; the ensemble playing and group dynamic that they established on Machine Head is awesome. Roger Glover love the tone he gets out of his Rickenbacker bass and drummer Ian Feather Lighter - She Keeps Bees - Eight Houses burn on this album and Ritchie Blackmore proves himself a virtuoso on Lazy - Deep Purple - Machine Head electric guitar.

Machine Head may be Deep Purple’s most famous and defining album. It certainly reached the highest on the Billboard charts, and contained their most famous song, Smoke on the Water.

We have to listen to all of Machine Head from beginning to end—it's just that good. This landmark album is an exultant hard rock classic for a good reason: It’s packed with chugging heavy metal moments, from the psychedelic vocal echo on "Space Truckin'" to the mightiest of all guitar riffs on "Smoke on the Water." Although all songs on Machine Head are officially credited to all five band members, this one was written mostly by bassist Roger Glover. “Pictures of Home” is Deep Purple at their most poignant, a driving rhythm topped by sweeping vocals pushing out deep lyrical motifs, all accented by the distinct, distorted Hammond organ of John Lord.
